Hedgehogs & Hamsters
Hamsters are rodents with 19 species classified into seven genera. Often loved as pets, golden or Syrian hamsters are commonly kept as pets. These come in different colors including black, grey, white, or a mixture of several colors. While hamsters have soft fur on their bodies, hedgehogs have a coat of sharp spikes on their bodies. The feeding and nutritional requirements of both mammals are different. Hedgehogs unlike hamsters are carnivores and prefer eating insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, and frogs. Hamsters on the other hand are omnivores and eat seeds, grains, nuts, cracked corn, fruits, and vegetables along with insects.
Hamsters aren’t a fan of leftovers and need to be served with fresh food daily. To ensure balanced nutrition, hamsters can be offered fruits and veggies once in a while along with insects. However, these need to be less than 20% in proportion. A perfect diet for hedgehogs, in general, includes a mixture of dry food, live supplements, and insect mix treats. Food mixtures made specifically for hedgehogs are an ideal choice to diversify the meals for your furry friend. Besides these, live supplements including crickets, roaches, and mealworms are loved by hedgehogs for their meat content and have proven to e highly nutritious and beneficial for them.
