Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between live and dried insects? Live insects move, which triggers hunting behaviour and natural feeding. Dried insects carry the same protein and fats, but no movement and no moisture.

2. Are dried insects less nutritious? No. Careful drying retains protein, amino acids and fatty acids. What you lose is moisture and movement, not nutrition.

3. Mealworms or superworms? Superworms are about ten times heavier with less chitin, so they suit bigger pets and digest easily. Mealworms suit small birds, juvenile fish and small mammals.

4. Can insects replace my pet's regular food? No. Insects are a protein-rich supplement and treat, not a complete diet for any pet.

5. Which pets can eat insects? Aquarium fish, turtles, companion and garden birds, reptiles, backyard poultry, and small animals such as hamsters, sugar gliders and hedgehogs. Rabbits, guinea pigs and other herbivores should never be fed insects.

6. Which insect size suits my pet? Match the insect to the mouth. Tiny mealworms (0.75-1 cm) for finches, small fish and hatchlings. Mealworms (2-2.5 cm) for budgies, mid-size fish and small mammals. Superworms (5-5.5 cm) for large fish, adult turtles and bigger reptiles.

7. How much at a time? Only what your pet finishes in a few minutes, then remove the rest. Insects are rich in fat, so smaller portions more often beat one large feed.

8. Should I soak dried insects before feeding? Soak five to ten minutes in warm water for turtles, tortoises, and small animals. Fish and birds can take them dry, though soaking helps dried worms sink for fish.
