Taking care of a newborn mynah bird can be a heartwarming experience, but it also requires a lot of attention and responsibility. Whether you found a baby mynah fallen from its nest or it has been abandoned by its parents, it’s important to know what to do next. This guide will help you understand how to take care of a baby mynah so it can grow healthy and strong.
Check If the Baby Mynah Really Needs Help
If you find a baby mynah on the ground, don’t pick it up immediately. Sometimes, fledglings (young birds learning to fly) are just practicing. Watch from a distance for about an hour. If you see the parents feeding it, there is no need to interfere. But if the baby looks weak, is cold, injured, or in danger from animals or traffic, then you can step in and help.
Make a Warm, Safe Nest
Newborn mynahs cannot control their body temperature, so warmth is very important. Take a small box or basket and line it with soft cloth, dry grass, or tissue paper. Don’t use synthetic fabric because threads can get tangled around the bird’s feet. You can keep a warm water bottle wrapped in cloth near the box to keep the chick warm, but don’t let it touch the bird directly. Keep the box indoors, away from noise, fans, or strong lights.
Feeding the Baby Mynah

For the first few days, newborn mynahs need to be fed every 20–30 minutes from sunrise to sunset. You can make a soft paste using soaked dog biscuits (unsalted), mashed bananas, boiled egg yolk, or ripe papaya. Use a dropper, cotton bud, or blunt tweezers to feed tiny amounts into the chick’s open mouth. Be very gentle. As the chick grows (after 5 days), you can introduce mashed rice, fruits, and soft insect paste. Never give milk, bread, or spicy food. These can harm the bird.
Keep Everything Clean
A clean space is very important for baby birds. Change the bedding once or twice a day. After feeding, gently clean the baby’s beak with a moist tissue. Remove leftover food from around the mouth and nest to prevent flies and infections. Wash your hands before and after every feeding session to avoid spreading germs.
Watch for Growth
As the baby mynah grows, you will notice changes. Around day 6 to 8, it will open its eyes. After 10 days, feathers will start to appear, and it may try to move or flutter. You can increase the feeding gap to every 1–2 hours. Make sure its crop (the small bulge near its throat where food collects) is full but not overly stretched. The bird should be active, chirping, and alert.
Teach It to Fly

At around 15–18 days, the baby will start practicing flying. You can place it in a safe room or enclosed space and encourage short flights. Let it hop and flap its wings. You can also start placing fruit pieces or small worms in a shallow bowl to teach self-feeding. During this time, reduce how much you handle the bird, so it doesn’t become too attached to humans.
Set It Free at the Right Time
When the baby mynah can fly well, eat on its own, and act alert, it’s time to release it. Choose a safe, green area — preferably near where you found it. Release early in the morning when the bird has a full day to adjust. You can keep some food nearby in case it comes back the first few days. Stay back and let it go on its own. Most birds adapt quickly when raised properly.
Raising a newborn mynah is not easy, but it’s a beautiful act of kindness. The goal is always to help the bird return to nature safely. With warmth, the right food, cleanliness, and love, you can give a baby mynah a second chance at life. If you ever feel unsure, reach out to a bird rescue center or local vet for help. Helping a wild bird survive and fly again is truly something special.
