Turacos are exotic, colorful birds native to sub-Saharan Africa, recognized for their vibrant plumage and unique flight patterns. They belong to the family Musophagidae and are sometimes called "plantain eaters" due to their habit of feeding on plantains and other fruits. Turacos are known for their distinct green and purple feathers, and they are one of the few birds that can produce a green pigment in their feathers, called turacins.

These birds are arboreal, which means they are adapted to live in trees, and they thrive in dense forests with abundant vegetation. In captivity, they require space, proper diet, and mental stimulation to ensure their well-being.

1. Housing & Enclosure For Turacos

Turacos are active, climbing birds that need an environment that allows them to exhibit their natural behaviors. Their enclosure should mimic a forest or tree-dense habitat as much as possible.

Size & Structure:

  • Aviary Dimensions: At a minimum, the aviary should be at least 6 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 6 feet tall. The more space you provide, the happier they will be.

  • Perches: Provide various sizes and thicknesses of branches for perching and climbing. They use their feet to grasp branches, and variety in perch types helps with foot health.

  • Climbing Structures: Turacos enjoy hopping, so having branches and ropes at different heights encourages movement and exercise.

  • Protection: Secure the aviary with mesh that prevents escape, and make sure it’s predator-proof to keep the birds safe.

  • Shelter: Turacos need shelter from direct sun and harsh weather conditions. Include shaded areas within the aviary, and ensure it remains cool in hot weather.

Environment:

  • Humidity: As tropical birds, Turacos prefer moderate to high humidity. Maintain a humid environment, especially if you live in a dry area.

  • Cleanliness: Regular cleaning of the aviary is essential to prevent diseases and parasites. Remove droppings, uneaten food, and moldy bedding regularly.

2. Diet of Turacos

Turacos are primarily frugivores, but they also consume a variety of other foods in their diet. Providing a varied, balanced diet is critical to maintaining their health.

  • Primary Diet: Fruits

Turacos are frugivores, meaning their primary diet consists of fresh fruits.

They enjoy a variety of fruits such as Bananas, apple, Grapes, berries, mangoes, papayas. Fruits provide essential vitamins, natural sugars, and energy.

  • Fruits in Captivity

    • Since Turacos are forest-dwelling birds, their diet in the wild is rich in forest fruits, making fruit an ideal food choice in captivity as well.

    • Fresh fruits should be cut into manageable pieces to make them easier for the bird to consume.

    • Remove any leftover food after a few hours to prevent spoilage and maintain cleanliness.

  • Leafy Greens & Vegetables

    • In addition to fruits, Turacos should also be provided with leafy greens and vegetables, such as: Spinach, Kale, Peas, Sweet potatoes, Broccoli.

    • These vegetables provide fiber, micronutrients, and additional vitamins.

  • Occasional Protein

    • While Turacos don’t require a large amount of protein, they can benefit from occasional protein sources, such as: Mealworms, Crickets, Boiled eggs (in moderation)

    • Protein helps mimic their natural diet, as they may consume insects in the wild.

    • Protein should be offered in moderation to avoid health problems, such as kidney stress.

  • Bird Pellets

    • High-quality bird pellets designed specifically for frugivores should be included in their diet to provide balanced nutrition.

    • Be sure to choose pellets that are low in iron, as Turacos are sensitive to iron accumulation, which could lead to health problems.

  • Water & Bathing

    • Fresh, clean water should always be available for drinking.

    • Encourage your Turaco to bathe regularly to maintain healthy feathers and proper hygiene. A shallow dish of water or misting works well for this.

3. Socialization & Behavior of Turacos

Turacos are social birds with distinct personalities. In the wild, they live in pairs or small flocks, so keeping them as single birds requires more attention and interaction from their human caretakers.

Social Needs:

  • Interaction: Turacos thrive on companionship. If you have only one, ensure you interact with it daily to prevent loneliness. They often become quite attached to their owners and can form strong bonds.

  • Multiple Turacos: If you have more than one, they should be kept in pairs or small groups, as they tend to enjoy each other’s company and communicate with one another. However, make sure they have enough space to avoid aggression.

  • Bonding: Spending time with your Turaco helps build trust. They might even learn to respond to your voice or mimic simple sounds.

Behavioral Characteristics:

  • Active: Turacos are energetic birds that enjoy flying and hopping around. They are often seen flying in short bursts or hopping across branches in search of food or to engage with their surroundings.

  • Curiosity: They are inquisitive by nature and enjoy exploring their environment. Place various objects, climbing structures, and toys in their cage to keep them mentally engaged.

  • Vocalization: While not overly noisy, Turacos can produce a variety of calls, from soft whistles to more melodic sounds. They use these calls to communicate with others in their flock.

4. Health Care And Common Issues in Turacos

Regular health checks are important to detect any early signs of illness. Turacos are generally hardy, but they are still susceptible to diseases like any other bird.

Signs of Illness:

  • Lethargy or loss of energy

  • Changes in droppings (diarrhea or a sudden change in consistency)

  • Loss of appetite or weight loss

  • Feather problems like excessive molting or feather plucking

  • Respiratory issues, such as labored breathing or wheezing

If any of these signs occur, it's important to seek veterinary care promptly. Turacos should be checked by an avian vet for diseases like avian pox or parasitic infections. Regular fecal exams are recommended to check for parasites.

Cleanliness:

  • Enclosure Hygiene: Regularly clean the aviary and food/water containers to prevent bacterial or fungal infections. Avoid letting food sit in the aviary for long periods.

  • Feather Health: Regularly provide them with opportunities to bathe. This helps to prevent dry, damaged feathers and ensures good hygiene.

5. Mental Stimulation & Enrichment

As highly intelligent birds, Turacos need mental stimulation to stay happy. Boredom can lead to destructive behaviors such as feather plucking.

Toys & Activities:

  • Foraging Toys: Scatter their food or use toys that require them to work for their treats.

  • Climbing Structures: Include branches, ropes, and swings to encourage their natural climbing behaviors.

  • Interactive Play: Use bells, mirrors, and soft materials that they can interact with to keep their minds active.

Training:

Turacos can also be trained with patience. You can teach them simple commands or tricks, but avoid excessive handling or stress. Positive reinforcement works best, and rewards like food or praise can help them learn.

6. Breeding In Turacos

If you're interested in breeding Turacos, it’s essential to create the right conditions. Ensure that your aviary is large enough for a pair of Turacos and provide a nesting box or suitable natural nesting materials. The female typically lays 2–3 eggs, and both parents take turns incubating them and caring for the chicks after hatching.

Caring for Turacos requires attention to their unique dietary needs, social nature, and natural behaviors. By providing them with a spacious, safe, and enriching environment, a varied and healthy diet, and regular health checks, you can ensure your Turaco thrives in captivity. Their playful, curious personalities make them a joy to keep, and with the right care, they can form strong bonds with their owners and live long, happy lives.
